Sinopsis: El mundo de la aventura en tierras exóticas siempre fascinó a Carl, en especial los viajes de su ídolo, Charles F. Muntz, el cual decidió vivir en exilio desde que fue acusado de falsificar el esqueleto de una de sus especies descubiertas. Esta fascinación llevó a Carl a conocer a Ellie, de quien eventualmente se enamora y pasa con ella el resto de su vida; a pesar de que la afición por la aventura siempre estuvo latente en ambos, la cotidianidad de la vida nunca les permitió realizar sus sueños de viajar a Sudamérica y terminar sus días ahí. Ahora Carl, solo y cansado de la urbanización a su alrededor, decidirá dejarse llevar por sus instintos aventureros, llevándose sin querer a Russell, un niño explorador, quien poco a poco se convierte en su familia.

Crítica: Aunque nunca estuve de acuerdo en que la película recibiera la nominación al Oscar para Mejor Película, me parece que su victoria en Mejor Película Animada está bien merecida, en especial en el aspecto técnico: Pixar nunca decepciona al mostrar sus habilidades. El mensaje del filme, como todos los grandes proyectos de Disney, es reconfortante e inspirador, y la creatividad de la historia es más que plausible. Sin embargo, no puedo sino sentir que en esta lucha por ser ingenioso e innovador, Disney va cayendo un tanto en lo absurdo. No que las películas de dicha compañía hayan tenido siempre mucha lógica o sentido común, pero hay ciertas partes en que te pones a pensar en lo incoherente que resulta la secuencia de eventos. De cualquier manera, Up permanece como otro gran logro de Disney Pixar que no debería faltar en la repisa de cualquier amante de la animación.

Otra de las grandes bandas de la actualidad: Muse. Su música tiene tantos niveles y puede ser tanto compleja como simple, acompañada de la voz de Matt Bellamy, tan moldeable a las notas requeridas. Esta canción en especial es de mis favoritas entre su repertorio debido a introducción rápida y agradable, además de la letra, expresando esas ansias y el enfrentamiento en la atracción, siendo todo sobrellevado por la necesidad de vivir antes de que nuestro tiempo acabe.

Little Manhattan / How To Save A Life

Sinopsis: En la enorme Manhattan, Gabe es un niño común y corriente: atiende la escuela primaria, le gusta practicar deportes y jugar con sus amigos, y lo más importante, no admite a niñas en su vida. Pero todo cambia cuando, gracias a una clase de karate que decide tomar, Rosemary comienza a llamar su atención cada vez con más fuerza, y aunque la ha conocido desde hace varios años, jamás había imaginado que llegaría a llenar de tal manera su cabeza. Gabe comienza a experimentar lo que es querer estar con alguien, sentir la necesidad de hacerlo, lo cual vuelve todo el mundo muy confuso para sólo un niño, cuyo mayor problema será aprender a lidiar con un corazón roto.

Crítica: Las comedias románticas no son, por lo regular, sobresalientes, y las veo sólo para pasar el rato. Pero debo decir que cuando vi ésta quedé cautivado, impresionado por la precisión con que se narra ese salto hacia el querer. Uno no puede sino sentir todo lo que el protagonista siente, identificándose con esas épocas confusas e incómodas en nuestra infancia. Aunque la película no alcance ningún grado de genialidad en sus aspectos, la recomiendo ampliamente por el valor sentimental, el cual estoy seguro que muchos encontrarán como lo hice yo.

Esta canción es una de ésas que al escucharla automáticamente te gusta, pues la voz es agradable y el ritmo pegajoso. Pero al profundizar en la letra nos damos cuenta del peso que tiene. The Fray siempre logra encontrar un equilibrio entre un buen mensaje y un buen tono, creando música con mucho significado, pero digerible para el público general. Y aquí nos hablan de ese lento proceso en que nos volvemos extraños con los que más queremos, y como las palabras que no decimos nos van formando un nudo cada vez más grande en la garganta.

The Devil Wears Prada / The Wind Blows

Sinopsis: Andrea es sólo otra joven más en Nueva York tratando de convertirse en una periodista exitosa, para lo cual consigue un empleo como asistente de la editora de la revista más prestigiosa en cuanto a moda y el vestir se refiere: Runway. Pero cuando la fría actitud y falta de aprecio por parte de Miranda Priestly, la famosa editora, destruya todo ánimo de Andrea para seguir adelante, deberá decidir si luchar por la meta que se había propuesto, dañando su vida y relaciones personales en el transcurso, o simplemente rendirse ante la adversidad con nombre y apellido.

Crítica: Muchas personas elogiaron está película desde su fecha de lanzamiento, aunque según he escuchado y leído de parte de muchos, por las razones equivocadas. Aunque la moda y el glamour son el tema principal de la película (y son además bien representados), el filme tiene muchísimo más que ofrecer, comenzando con la increíble actuación de Meryl Streep (uno de mis ídolos en el ambiente) sin dejar muy atrás a Hathaway, así como la fotografía y el guion fluído y entretenido ─aunque no sé que tan bien adaptado esté de la novela─. Aunque muchos consideren esta película como hecha principalmente para la audiencia femenina, The Devil Wears Prada es rica en muchos aspectos, disfrutable para cualquier espectador casual o cinéfilo.

Auque esta banda nunca ha sido de mis favoritas, varias de sus canciones han llegado a gustarme bastante. Como ejemplo, The Wind Blows, la cual es una de sus canciones con ritmo no necesariamente lento, sino calmado. Y como casi siempre, es la letra lo que más influencía en la decisión, la cual nos lleva a esas relaciones complicadas que nunca mueren por completo, de ese irse y venir pero nunca marcharse para siempre, hasta que de repente un día ya no se sienten. No es una de las recomendaciones más fuertes que tengo, pero es una canción agradable para escuchar de vez en cuando.

American Beauty / Boston

Sinopsis: La historia gira en torno a la familia Burnham: Lester, el padre, se encuentra atrapado en la monotonía de un trabajo que odia y su fría relación con su hija adolescente insatisfecha e insegura, Jane, y su esposa Carolyn, perdida en el materialismo y el fracaso de su trabajo en bienes raíces. Mientras Lester encuentra en Angela, amiga de su hija, y en Ricky, hijo de su vecino veterano y homofóbico, la inspiración para cambiar hacia lo que siempre ha querido ser, su esposa recurrirá al hombre exitoso que admira y Jane comenzará a descubrir el amor que ha buscado inconscientemente al lado de Ricky. Mientras todos buscan su camino en la vida, un destino fatal les aguarda.

Crítica: ¡Finalmente, una película del siglo XX! Podría decirse que esta producción lo tiene todo: una actuación memorable, un guion profundo e interesante con personajes bien construídos, una dirección y fotografía que vuelve la experiencia amena y agradable. American Beauty realmente hace reflexionar al espectador en más de un aspecto de su vida, pues las situaciones no sólo lo ameritan, sino que los personajes son la personificación de aquellos con los que convivimos día con día. Al llegar los créditos finales, uno no puede sino maravillarse ante la rara genialidad que nace de una producción tan Hollywoodense.

Esta canción tuvo dos versiones: la original, con un ritmo un poco más lento y suave, y la que presentaron en su primer álbum bajo una discografía, con más arreglo instrumental. Aunque la diferencia entre ambas no es muy radical, la emoción que evoca es un tanto distinta. Sea cual sea, la canción es realmente hermosa, con una buena letra con dos lados con que sentirse identificado: alguien que sufre por ver sufrir a quien ama, o alguien que descubre no ser feliz en la monotonía en que vive. Con mil razones para ser recomendada, aquí la tienen.
